View All Answers (1)A. Gauav ji, first of all, important for us to know the exact cause of that back pain. Still you can try cold compression on your back pain, along with sitting and sleeping in a good posture, do not massage that area, try light stretching and yoga poses but before going for any of these remedies, you should consult a doctor.

At this age, muscular and bone loss happens at greater pace and energy levels are dipping lower. Do more exercises that involve their dead weight like push ups, sit-ups and weightless squats, but they can also do some weight training. I also feel that they should do more cardio based things because that will give them way better benefits than weight training at this point.

Tell them if they slouch this way, there can be all kinds of problems with your bones and fractures. Also, if they keep their spine straight, they will have a very strong. Besides the sitting and standing posture, tell them not to lay on stomach but lay straight on back.

By rehabilitation program I presume you mean regular physiotherapy and exercise. If you are getting better you are on the right track. If not, you need to see your doctor.

Osteoporosis as inevitable as income tax if you allow me to copy George Bernard Shaw. As age increases, bones become weak and collapse into a kind of wedge shape that permits the rounded shape that you are referring to. You need to be on medication to minimize osteoporosis which your doctor will prescribe. You need to be on a calcium rich diet - milk, dairy products, soya, green vegetables are good sources. Thirdly please remember that weight bearing exercise has an anti osteoporotic effect. The simplest and easiest form of this is a daily walk. Spine exercises to strengthen the back muscles, improving posture will minimise the rounded shape. A brace called an ASH brace is helpful.

Degenerative disc disease simply means age related wear and tear of the spine. Now that is a little hard to digest if you are a young person but the fact is that disc degeneration commences in the twenties at a slow pace and picks up as age increases. The treatment of this is firstly not to worry about it but to maintain good bone health by checking vitamin D levels and correcting it if it is low. Secondly, exercise is equally important. Thirdly being positive and getting on with your life and doing the things you want to do is what you need to focus on.

The question that needs to be answered is when someone is not getting better is 'what is the diagnosis?' Normally in patients with back pain, physiotherapy, medicines do help. However there are many causes of back pain and it may be worthwhile to see your doctor. Every cause of back pain does not need a spine operation.

It is quite normal to be scared of surgery! There have been many advances in spine surgery and the fear of getting confined to bed for simply ages is a thing of the past. Modern spine fusion involves putting in metal hardware into the spine which stays in the body. These are called implants and are made of titanium. Depending on your problem these are inserted from the front or from the back. Bone graft is added. The latter permits fusion while the former maintains the appropriate position till the fusion is solid. Sure, enjoy your time with your grandchildren - it a great moment to savor. Your doctor would be the best person to advice you on operative or non operative treatment.

Hold it right there!. Before we talk about any surgery, we need to have a diagnosis that is made clinically, after examining you. We then need to support this with relevant investigations. We need to be clear that surgery is the only option for your pain and that other avenues of treatment are no longer applicable. I suggest you see your doctor and discuss things with him first; you could ask him to refer you to a spine surgeon if needed.
