Why is my son's depression not getting treated?

My son has been suffering from depression after my husband and I parted ways about 5 years ago. I had taken to him to the doctor when he was almost suicidal and got medications prescribed by the doctor. He has been taking medicines ever since-been 2 years now-and I do not see any change? Is he resistant to the treatment by any chance?
