Bleeding and red, swollen, or tender gums, gums that have pulled away from the teeth are the most common signs of gum problems in diabetes. Moreover, there can be pus between the teeth and gums (when you press on the gums).

Bad breath and permanent teeth that are loose or moving away from each other also suggest a serious gum problem. Changes in the fit of partial dentures or bridges also mean that you should see your dentist.
